Journalism 360 No. 2: New Lab, 360 Quizzes, Exciting Awards

By on May 18, 2018

Welcome to the second issue of the Journalism 360 newsletter, a biweekly digest of stories and resources from the immersive journalism space and updates on what the Journalism 360 community has been up to.

A key goal of Journalism 360 is to encourage experimentation and knowledge sharing. This newsletter is one way we’re working to achieve that goal, and we’d love for you to be a part of it. Want to share a story about a new immersive storytelling technique, a great workflow you’ve developed or thoughts an immersive journalism topic you care about? Get in touch — hit reply on this email or write to newsletter@journalists.org with your ideas for future issues.

Noteworthy

Lab launch. The McClatchy New Ventures Lab celebrated its opening in Sacramento, Calif., this week. The lab will focus on emerging technology and immersive storytelling — experimenting with new formats and platforms, promoting collaboration and turning ideas into businesses.

Daily 360. Dane Christensen committed to posting a 360 video every day for 30 days. Along the way he learned a workflow that works (and doesn’t work), that audio is king and what’s unique about the language of VR.

Add a quiz. Ole Krogsgaard used Fader to create quizzes and transformed three 360 pictures into an interactive immersive story about a visit to the Belarusian Great Patriotic War Museum in Minsk.

Shiny awards. ONA is accepting entries for the 2018 Online Journalism Awards now through June 7. Categories include recognition for Excellence in Immersive Storytelling, which in 2017 was awarded to the “After Solitary” project by Emblematic Group and Frontline.
