From the archives: The internet and the 2004 U.S. elections
We are sharing resources from the ONA archives throughout 2019, as we celebrate 20 years of inspiring innovation in journalism.
In 2004, a “super panel” at the ONA Conference gathered then syndicated columnist Arianna Huffington, bloggers Mickey Kaus and Dave Winer, former Howard Dean campaign manager Joe Trippi and Rock the Vote President Jehmu Greene to discuss the role the internet played in the 2004 election. Winer considered the idea of an online community influencing a presidential candidate a “pure fantasy” did suggest bloggers would replace community journalism’s role in local politics. How times have changed! If you’ve produced innovative elections coverage — in the U.S. or elsewhere — or have best practices to share, consider pitching a session idea to the ONA19 Suggestion Box.
