ONA Weekly #440: New Year, New Career?

By on December 14, 2022

New year, new career?

‘Tis the season for self-reflection. For some, it is also the season for career reflection. Creating alignment with your values, strengths and aspirations and defining the impact you want to make with your work are a big part of the process. Photo by Jess Bailey on Unsplash

If you’re feeling stuck and wondering what you’re good at and actually enjoy doing, you may be having a “journalism mid-life crisis.” At ONA19, we heard from three journalists who shared what got them to, through and over their own journalism midlife crises. Listen to the conversation

Maybe you’ve already decided on a career shift within the journalism industry. Earlier this year, we explored how to make the move to a news product role from other positions within a news organization. Give it a watch and learn how your newsroom experience can position you to make a change, even if it isn’t to a product role.

Job security is obviously a big factor in choosing a sustainable career. With so many news organizations struggling financially, many journalists may be looking for alternatives. The ONA21 session Looking at a Career in Local Broadcast as a Pathway to Digital Success reveals why a local TV newsroom might be the best place to find a sustainable career and upward mobility for digital journalists.

If you just need a break and want to unplug, we’ve got some ideas for you. And if you’ve decided to seek a new opportunity, the ONA Career Center is a great place to start.
