Major Funders

The Democracy Fund’s generous grant supports ONA’s efforts to provide training and education to journalists.
John S. and James L. Knight Foundation grants support the Online Journalism Awards, HBCU Digital Media Fellowship and Women’s Leadership Accelerator. Knight has also supported ONA’s local community-building initiative and the Challenge Fund for Innovation in Journalism Education.
Hearst Foundations Hearst Foundation funding in 2022 supported ONA’s efforts to provide more training and education to journalists.
The Inasmuch Foundation supports the Women’s Leadership Accelerator and ONA’s work to support education on emerging tech trends for local news.
Dow Jones Foundation A generous grant from The Dow Jones Foundation supports our Women’s Leadership Accelerator, a yearlong intensive program that supercharges the leadership and management skills of women who are pushing digital innovation.
Ford Foundation funding supports ONA’s efforts to provide more training and education to journalists. The foundation also helped support the launch of the ONA-Poynter Leadership Academy for Women in Digital Media in 2015.

MSN and MSN International’s generous donation and committee involvement makes possible the selection of current and future MJ Bear Fellows.

The MJ Bear fellowship fellowship identifies and nurtures journalism stars under 30. On behalf of our Board and staff, our warmest appreciation goes to the Bear and Carpenter families — Philip Bear, Robin Bear, the late Jeanette B.
