Call for 2019 Online Journalism Awards Screeners

Over 1,700 OJA finalists have been recognized since 1999. None of that could be possible without our team of screeners. Above, ONA board member Eric Carvin presents an award at the 2016 OJA Ceremony in Denver, CO. (Photo by Anya Semenoff for the Online News Association)

Help discover the best work in digital journalism! We’re looking for volunteer screeners to lend their expertise in evaluating entries for the Online Journalism Awards — applications are open now through June 14.

Each year we select a diverse set of 150 volunteer screeners to kickstart the review process for the OJAs and pass on their collective recommendations to the OJA judges, who then select the finalists and winners. Screeners are professionals from all parts of the industry — from local reporters, broadcast journalists and newsroom leaders to product managers, designers and data journalists. In 2018, they reviewed more than 1,100 entries from journalists and news teams representing 36 countries.

The Job

  • Reviewing approximately 25-30 entries.
  • Provide scores on entries based upon guidelines provided.

The Requirements

  • Must have a passion and expertise in digital journalism.
  • Must be able to commit 10-15 hours to review entries June 18-July 3.

The Perks

  • An opportunity to review some of the best digital journalism work in the world.
  • A meaningful volunteer experience.

If you’re interested in participating, please apply by June 14. To reflect the full breadth of the industry, we encourage those working for local news organizations as well as U.S. national and non-U.S. based groups to participate. Screeners will be assigned entries the week of June 18 and have approximately two weeks to review their assignments.
