We’re excited to announce that Gene Demby, a host of NPR’s Code Switch podcast and a Philadelphia native, will host the 2023 Online Journalism Awards (#OJA23) Ceremony and Banquet!
Gene is a founding member of NPR’s Code Switch team. In 2020, Code Switch was named Apple’s inaugural Podcast of the Year. Plus, Gene’s no stranger to the OJAs – his essays for the Code Switch blog earned him the 2014 Online Journalism Award for Online Commentary, Large Newsroom.
Since 2000, the OJAs have been the premier awards honoring excellence and innovation in digital journalism. The Online News Association community will gather to celebrate selected 2023 finalists and winners at the OJAs Ceremony and Banquet on Aug. 26 at 7 p.m. EDT in Philadelphia. This exciting celebration is the closing event of the 2023 ONA Conference in Philadelphia. The evening will start with a networking reception at 6 p.m., followed by the ceremony and banquet, presented with support from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.
Five awards come with prize money totaling $52,000, thanks to 3M, the University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication, the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications, McKinsey Publishing and SmartNews. These categories celebrate science reporting, community-centered journalism, investigative data journalism, climate change reporting and general excellence.
Register for ONA23: Philadelphia by Aug. 18 and add your ticket to the OJA ceremony during the registration process. If you’re already registered for ONA23, you can add on an OJA ticket by updating your registration. Standalone tickets are also available.
