Siri Carpenter is an award-winning science journalist and editor whose writing and editorial work has appeared in The New York Times, Science, Scientific American, Science News and many other publications. Siri is cofounder and editor-in-chief of The Open Notebook, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to help journalists improve their skills in covering science, health, technology and the environment. She is also the editor of the book The Craft of Science Writing. She is a past president of the National Association of Science Writers and is a member of the Online News Association, the Society of Professional Journalists, the Society of Environmental Journalists and the Association of Health Care Journalists. She has a Ph.D. in social psychology from Yale University and lives in Madison, Wisconsin.
The Open Notebook (TON) is widely regarded as the leading online source of training and educational materials for journalists around the world who cover science. TON fosters a supportive, diverse and inclusive global community that enables reporters and editors who cover science to learn and thrive. Since 2010, it has published more than 500 articles about the craft of science journalism and delivered numerous training and mentoring programs that empower journalists at all experience levels to tell impactful, engaging stories.
There is a large difference between seeking “buy-in” and seeking “permission.” Siri did the former and not the latter, creating an extremely useful, thorough and needed resource and not asking first, if it was ok to do so.”
