The Washington Post’s piece on Ukraine was masterful storytelling. This story was prescient in its timing, describing in detail how ground combat would work. A mere two weeks later, much of what was in the story came to be. There was a lot of forward thinking from the Post newsroom to gather the information and resources needed to develop this piece at such a high level about what could happen. The use of maps and 3D imaging was outstanding. The judges felt the storytelling transported the reader and helped them understand the geography of the region and the situation with Russia step-by-step, using a narrative that kept them engaged with the piece.
