If you have more specific questions about rules and eligibility, please contact us at <a href=\"mailto:awards@vip-local.vipdev.lndo.site\">awards@vip-local.vipdev.lndo.site<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"p2\">General Eligibility<\/h3>\n<p>The Online Journalism Awards are open to newsrooms of all types, websites, micro sites, blogs, podcasts and all digital platforms where journalists have originated the content or selected and amplified it. Independent creators producing journalistic content that is shared under their own brand are also eligible to enter the contest. Search services, portal sites and wire services may submit content they created that fits the eligibility requirements. Individuals and organizations may enter the contest. Online retailers and advertising sites are not eligible.<\/p>\n<h4>Publication Date<\/h4>\n<p>The 2025 Online Journalism Awards are open to work published between <strong>April 15, 2024 and April 2, 2025<\/strong>. Entries must be available online for one year from date of submission. <em><strong> Submissions close on Thursday, May 22, 2025 at 11:59 p.m. EDT (3:59 a.m UTC).<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p3\">Multiple Entries<\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\">If submitting multiple entries (either in the same category or across multiple categories), fill out entry forms for each entry, then make one purchase for all of the entries you submitted. You may only enter the same project into<strong> three<\/strong> categories; you may reference entries in portfolio categories, but one project\/story may not be the primary part of more than three entries.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"button\" style=\"margin: 0 0 15px;\" href=\"\/awards\/\" rel=\"noopener\">See All Categories<\/a><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"sizes\" class=\"p3\">Size Categories<\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\">Some categories are broken out by size, as determined by the total number of the organization\u2019s full-time or equivalent employees who focus on or support digital production (even indirectly) including ad sales reps, technical staff and\/or a business development department. If an entry was produced with external resources \u2014 contractors, freelancers, etc. \u2014 that number must be included when determining size.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Micro newsroom:\u00a0<\/strong>For an entrant to be considered \u201cmicro,\u201d the organization must have 15 or fewer employees. In categories that do not include a specific option to enter as a micro newsroom, organizations may submit under the small newsroom category.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Small newsroom<\/strong>: For an entrant to be considered \u201csmall,\u201d the organization must have <span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">between 16-50 employees.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Medium newsroom<\/strong>: For an entrant to be considered \u201cmedium,\u201d the organization must have between 51 and 250 employees.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Large newsroom<\/strong>: For an entrant to be considered \u201clarge,\u201d the organization must have more than 250 employees.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4 class=\"p3\">Student Eligibility<\/h4>\n<p>To be eligible for The Student Journalism Award,\u00a0 the work being submitted must have been produced only by enrolled students receiving academic credit for the work being entered. Students can be full- or part-time; high school or undergraduate students. Work produced for pay is not eligible for these student awards. Work that was created by a student for credit but then subsequently and independently made available to a commercial publication is allowed, but should be explained in the entry.<\/p>\n<p>Graduate students may submit their work in all other categories of the Online Journalism Awards.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>A note about independent creator journalists:<\/strong> Independent creator journalists will typically qualify under the micro newsroom category. If an independent creator or freelancer creates content for or that is published on another brand (e.g., a newsroom&#8217;s site), it must be submitted under that other brand and reflect its size requirements. Content that is created for and published first on another brand and reshared\/republished on the creator&#8217;s own brand cannot be submitted under the independent creator\u2019s own brand.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A note about freelancers and contractors<\/strong>:\u00a0If an entry is the product of work with contractors or freelancers, include the number of staff on a freelance or contract basis with determining the size of your organization.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A note about partnerships<\/strong>:\u00a0If an entry is the product of a partnership of two or more organizations, enter into the size category corresponding to the combined staffs of the partner organizations, or enter into the <a href=\"https:\/\/journalists-org-develop.go-vip.co\/awards\/awards\/#collaborations\" rel=\"noopener\">Excellence in Collaboration and Partnerships<\/a> category.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A note about subsidiaries<\/strong>: Many media outlets are part of larger organizations. To determine the proper size for your entry, consider the following: if your organization is wholly independent and receives no technological, editorial, or financial support from your parent organization, then you may be eligible to enter into a smaller size category. However, if your organization receives material, technological, editorial or financial support from the larger entity, you may need to enter the larger organization category.<\/p>\n<p>When making your submission, you will be required to include a statement explaining why you believe your entry belongs in the selected size category. OJA judges have the final say as to whether your entry was entered in the proper size category. <strong>Entries determined to be mis-entered may be excluded from consideration<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"p2\">Submitting Entries<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Submissions for the 2025 Online Journalism Awards are open April 3 to May 22, 2025.<\/strong> Entries must be submitted <a href=\"https:\/\/journalists.secure-awards.com\/a\/home\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">through the online platform<\/a>, which will be updated before the submission window opens. To enter, fill out entry forms for each entry across all categories. Then pay for the total number of awards entries. <strong><em>Submissions close on Thursday, May 22, 2025 at 11:59 p.m. EDT (3:59 a.m. UTC).<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p3\">Requirements<\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\">Each category has its own set of criteria for entries to be eligible. <a href=\"https:\/\/journalists-org-develop.go-vip.co\/awards\/awards\/#descriptions\">Review specific criteria under each category description<\/a> to understand all entry requirements. Basic requirements include a URL where the entry is live and a username and password if the entry requires a subscription or registration.<strong> Please be aware the OJA judging panel often includes a significant number of international judges, so for sites not conforming to GDPR, additional screenshots or PDFs may be required.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">If an entry exists on a platform that is not available via a desktop computer, such as a smartphone or tablet application, entrants should provide a URL to a marketplace page where the application can be downloaded free of charge. If applicants are submitting entries that require installation of an app or some other technical requirement beyond the typical browser, please note that in your entry.<\/p>\n<p>For details on what to expect when completing the submission form, see <a href=\"https:\/\/journalists-org-develop.go-vip.co\/awards\/rules-and-eligibility\/submission-requirements\/\">Submission Requirements<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p3\">Editing Entries<\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\">Entries can be saved and edited until the deadline, but corrections cannot be made to entries after submitting. Please verify that all the information in your entry is correct before submitting.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p3\">Non-English Entries<\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\">Entries may be submitted in any language, however, we strongly recommend submitting your project in English. <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While we make efforts to enlist a multilingual panel of judges\u2014including English, Spanish and French speakers\u2014w<\/span>e are unable to guarantee that the judges reviewing your work will be fluent in non-English languages and may need to use an automated translation tool. If submitting an entry in a non-English language, please provide English translations to text, audio and video elements (where possible).<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"p2\">Payment<\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"p3\">Entry Fees<\/h4>\n<p>The Online Journalism Awards offers 5 pricing tiers for entries:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>ONA Members: $125 per entry<\/li>\n<li>Non ONA Members: $200 per entry<\/li>\n<li>Student ONA Members: $15 per entry<\/li>\n<li>Student Non ONA Members: $30 per entry<\/li>\n<li>Micro-Size Newsroom: $50 per entry**<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\">**ONA members and non-members working in micro-size newsrooms, defined as newsrooms with 15 or fewer employees, may take advantage of this rate. This includes eligible independent creator journalists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">If you\u2019d like to become an ONA member, <a href=\"https:\/\/journalist.memberclicks.net\/join\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">join here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p3\">How to Pay<\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\">In order to receive the member rate, sign in with your ONA membership account in <a href=\"https:\/\/journalists.secure-awards.com\/a\/home\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the online portal<\/a>. Otherwise, create an account on the awards site to submit an entry at the non-member rate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Payment should be made online by credit card. If you are unable to pay by credit card, you may pay by check. Please contact <a href=\"mailto:awards@vip-local.vipdev.lndo.site\">awards@vip-local.vipdev.lndo.site<\/a> to arrange check payment. <em><strong>Checks must be received by June 17, 2025 or your submission may be disqualified.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4 class=\"p3\">The Podcasting, Seriously Award Fund<\/h4>\n<p>The Online Journalism Awards is proud to partner with The Podcasting, Seriously Awards Fund.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.podcastingseriously.com\/fund\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Podcasting, Seriously Awards Fund<\/a> supports independent BIPOC, Queer and Trans audio professionals in submitting their work to media\/journalism awards, including ONA. The Fund accepts reimbursement applications on a rolling basis year-round and is committed to supporting 200+ independent producer award submissions each year, disbursing at least $20,000 annually. Qualifying applicants are encouraged to apply for a chance to get reimbursed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.podcastingseriously.com\/fund\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.podcastingseriously.com\/fund&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1639060321547000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1lXdEJBSpX9GpU2DGEJ3fR\">Learn more about the Fund and how to apply<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"p2\">Entry Evaluation<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\">Finalists and winners are determined by two rounds of evaluation. A first round of screeners will narrow down the entries to a group of semi-finalists. Then a second group of judges will meet online to select the finalists and winners.
