ONA Chicago: Serve the community–literally!

  When

Saturday, Jan. 11, 2020
1 pm-3:45 pm

An ONA Local event, hosted by ONA Chicago

As journalists, we serve our community every day.

Get 2020 off to a great start by doing just that–while networking with other Chicago journalists! Join ONA Chicago for a food repack session at the Greater Chicago Food Depository.

We’ve reserved eight spots at the afternoon session.

PLEASE NOTE: You must register with GCFD to RSVP for this event. They’ve set up a link just for us: https://volunteers.chicagosfoodbank.org/index.php?section=indGpRegistrations&action=profile_conditional&fwID=23396

Here’s what you need to know:

Volunteers will be working in an active warehouse and everyone must be registered in order to volunteer in the warehouse. The amount of food we are able to repackage is dependent on the number of scheduled volunteers; please keep us informed if there are any changes in volunteers or the amount of volunteers you expect to represent your group. It is much better to increase a group’s reservation size than to decrease it close to the session date. If there is anything we can do to help you and your group prepare for your session, please let us know. Thank you for your dedication to our mission of making sure no one goes hungry.

Description of Duties:

The Greater Chicago Food Depository regularly needs volunteers to help repacking donated food and other products. The Repack session is a great introduction to the Greater Chicago Food Depository, the work we do, and the need that we see in Cook County. A lot of the food we receive at our warehouse comes in bulk quantities, and volunteers are scheduled to help us break it down into more manageable sizes. In a Repack session you may sort produce, inspect and box shipments of bread, or repack bulk dry goods (pasta, rice, beans) into smaller quantities. Together, we can properly and efficiently distribute quality food to participating food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters in Cook County. The minimum age to volunteer is 11 years old, and 11-15 years old must be accompanied by an adult chaperone (who must also register).

Additional Information:

Arrival Time: Please plan on arriving no later than 10-15 minutes prior to the start of the session. Doors for check-in open 30 minutes before the scheduled start time.
Parking: Our parking lot is open to volunteers during Wednesday evening and Saturday sessions.
Food Onsite: Volunteers may consume food, snacks or beverages onsite in the designated area near volunteer check-in.
