ONA Philadelphia: State of Young Journalism: Lightning talks on the future of community engagement

  When

Thursday, Nov. 7, 2019
6 pm-8 pm

An ONA Local event, hosted by ONA Philadelphia

Journalism exists to inform communities, but too often misses in forming authentic connections with those communities or representing them accurately.

Presented by the Online News Association’s Philadelphia chapter, the Philadelphia Association of Black Journalists (PABJ) and The Yard: Center City as part of the State of Young Philly event series, State of Young Journalism is an evening of lightning talks given by young, locally focused news professionals — reporters, editors, project managers — who will speak about their work engaging neighborhoods and other hyperlocal groups.

The talks will focus on specific projects or larger-scale articles that were created to reach underserved communities, with time for Q&A and for attendees to pitch stories to presenters and other media-affiliated attendees.

Participating news organizations include:
– PABJ, presenting on The Color of Cannabis event (https://www.phillycolorofcannabis.com/)
– Billy Penn (https://billypenn.com/)
– The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Made in Philly (https://www.inquirer.com/life/inq/made-in-philly-20181210.html)
– Temple University’s Kensington Voice (https://kensingtonvoice.com/en/home/)

State of Young Philly (http://www.stateofyoungphilly.com/) is an event series that connects local organizations to young professionals, elected officials, organizational leaders and millennials. The annual series is organized by Young Involved Philadelphia (YIP), an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) organization founded in 2000. YIP strives to make Philadelphia the premier city for the next generation of young leaders by engaging, connecting, and representing the young demographic.
