Join us for an afternoon of inspiring discussions and meet the people and organizations doing innovative digital journalism in the Bay Area and beyond.

Digital Tools for Solutions Journalism
Catherine Cheney, Solutions Journalism Network
We’re partnering with the Solutions Journalism Network, a nonprofit that trains and connects journalists to cover how people are responding to problems, to talk digital tools for solutions journalism. We’ll talk about what solutions journalism is, why it’s important, and how to do it across a range of platforms. We’ll explore our recently revamped Solutions Story Tracker, and discuss other tips and tricks for investigating what’s working, including travel grants the Solutions Journalism Network makes available to journalists who complete its core training.

Roundup Session: Apps and Tools for Digital Storytelling
Michael Grant, John S. Knight Journalism Fellow
Recent studies give us insights on state of digital journalism and the appetite for creating it amongst the journalism community. The good news is, you don’t have to be a technologist to create compelling digital content and the opportunities for doing so are many. In this session, we’ll run through a roundup of the best, most accessible tools for digital storytelling that you and your newsroom should know about. We will touch on opportunities within the CMS and in social. We’ll also dive into mobile, desktop and online tools that include the creation of gifs and video. We will look at packaging media items, as well as use cases for for this media with content such as explainers, instructionals, data storytelling, profiles, teasers/promos and social videos.

Break and join us for a brief tour of two exhibits at the Tech Museum of Innovation featuring immersive technology, Body Worlds Decoded and Reboot Reality

3:45-4:45 p.m.
VR/360 Strategies for Journalism
Geri Migielicz, Stanford University; and Laura Hertzfeld, Journalism 360
Please join Journalism 360 for a workshop on immersive storytelling. We will take attendees through a playlist of 360 content and discuss in context the challenges of growing audience for VR/360, alternative approaches to immersive storytelling, and success stories in covering breaking news in VR and 360.

Happy Hour Hosted by The Mercury News
The Mercury News invites you to a post-workshop Happy Hour on the patio at Mezcal, where brothers Adolfo and Octavio Gomez recreate recipes learned from their mother and grandmother in their native Oaxaca. It’s at 25 W. San Fernando Street, a five-minute walk from The Tech, and we’ll be there from the end of the workshop until about 6:30.
