Join the Online News Association and the News Product Alliance for a networking meetup for women working at the intersection of editorial, engagement, technology and business. We’re closing out Women’s History Month and celebrating the launch of the first annual News Product Alliance Summit with an opportunity to meet your peers working in news product. Expect to leave with new ideas about your role, inspiration for a collaboration or partnership, new professional opportunities and new professional peers, mentors or colleagues.
This event will be participatory — not a webinar — so expect to have the chance to contribute to the conversation throughout the hour we’re together. After a brief welcome and icebreaker activity, we’ll invite you to join a breakout room to discuss one of several topics relating to news product work and life, including career advancement, leading through change, pandemic coping strategies and supporting newsroom diversity, equity and inclusion. After about 15-20 minutes, you’ll have the option to stay where you are or switch rooms to meet more of your peers.
Where will the meetup take place?
This event will be hosted on Zoom. For this particular event, you’ll have the best experience if you join via the Zoom app on a desktop or laptop computer so you can see more participants in the gallery view.
You can also join by the mobile app and take advantage of the breakout rooms, although the number of participants you can see at one time may be more limited.
Can I dial in by phone?
We don’t recommend joining by phone dial-in, if possible, so that you can see all the breakout room options and contribute to the conversation more easily. If you’re unfamiliar with Zoom, we’ll give a quick introduction in the beginning of the call and have staff on hand to troubleshoot, and we also suggest checking out the Zoom support site for more help.
Will this event be recorded?
We’ll follow Chatham House Rules for the event: in other words, attendees can use what they learn but will be asked to not share the person who originated it or their affiliation. Therefore, we will also not record this meetup to protect attendees’ privacy.
If you can’t make this event, we encourage you to check out the News Product Alliance Summit, happening March 30-31, 2021, and stay tuned for more networking events like this from ONA by subscribing to the ONA Weekly newsletter. You can also mark your calendar for ONA21, happening virtually June 22-25, 2021.
Will closed captioning be available?
We will have closed captioning available in the main Zoom room, but unfortunately Zoom doesn’t support closed captioning in breakout rooms yet. Please leave us a note in your registration if you need closed captioning, and we’ll work as best we can to get you access to them throughout the event.
Can non-binary people join this meetup?
Yes! We understand that gender identity and gender expression are personal and wide-ranging. If you are a non-binary person and are interested in joining this event, please feel free to register. If you have any questions about the event format or content, please email ONA Senior Manager of Communities and Local Journalism Initiatives Meghan Murphy at meghan@journalists.org.
Can I suggest a discussion topic for the meetup?
Please do! At registration you’ll see an option to type in your own topic suggestion, and we encourage you to input other things you’d like to discuss there. We will do our best to match you up with other folks interested in the same topic.
