Terry Parris Jr.

Terry Parris Jr is the Public Square Editor at the Headway, a new New York Times initiative to investigate significant national and international challenges through the lens of progress, or the obstacles to progress. Prior to the Headway, he was the Engagement Director for THE CITY, an independent, non-profit news organization covering New York City. At THE CITY, he lead all community engagement, crowdsourcing and social media efforts. This included launching the award-winning MISSING THEM project and The Open Newsroom initiative. Prior to THE CITY, he was a Deputy Editor at ProPublica. He's won multiple awards for this work in engagement, crowdsourcing and social media. He was also part of the team that was a finalist for the 2017 Pulitzer Prize in explanatory reporting for the work they did on ProPublica's Machine Bias project. He teaches as an adjunct professor in the engagement journalism program at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY. Prior to ProPublica, he was the digital editor at WDET 101.9 FM, NPR’s affiliate in Detroit. He earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Wayne State University in Detroit.
