The MJ Bear Fellowship honors six journalists under 30 each year who work in diverse newsrooms and represent the best of digital news. ONA has selected journalists for the fellowship annually since 2011. The fellows of this year’s cohort offered advice for early-career journalists.

Student Newsroom journalists tweeted their tips live from the session and compiled advice for Instagram.

Tip 1: If you don't have all the skills for a project, it's okay! As long as you're willing to learn new tools and get out of your comfort zone, no project is too big to tackle.

Tip 2 from Jessica Lee: Make friends with people who don't have the job that you do.
As a reporter, make close ties with photographers, graphic designers and social media experts.
"It's made me a better, well-rounded journalist."

Tip 3 from Caitlin Hernández: It doesn't have to be perfect – just get your project off the ground.

— ONA22 Student Newsroom (@ONANewsroom) September 22, 2022

Tip 4 from Claire Thompson: Get to know your audience – know who they are and what they're interested in.
"I have found it so valuable to hear directly from readers."

Tip 5 from Tazeen Pathan: Be willing to learn – practice is key.

Tip 6 from Myrka Moreno: Don't be afraid to reach out to people you want to learn more from.
It can be intimidating to reach out to people you look up to, but you can learn a lot by starting a conversation.

— ONA22 Student Newsroom (@ONANewsroom) September 22, 2022

Tip 7: Acknowledge your challenges.
Journalism is not an easy job, and it often takes a while to make a liveable salary.
Talk to your mentors and friends about your struggles to try and find a solution.

How do you make friends with colleagues without it being weird?
Find common ground with someone and start a conversation – it can be something as simple as growing up in the same state.
Be confident in introducing yourself and don't ever be afraid of being yourself!
