How do you convince your editors? How do you protect journalists from retaliation? How do you get data when there are no FOIA laws?<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">These were just a few of the questions addressed at the session \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/ona13.journalists.org\/sessions\/closing-the-digital-and-data-divide\/#.UmBM_mR3ids\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Closing the Digital and Data Divide: Data Journalism in Developing Countries<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">There are no simple answers, and in some cases no clear solution in sight, said <a href=\"Twitter.com\/EvaConstantaras\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eva Constantaras<\/a>, the session\u2019s speaker and the data journalism advisor for Internews.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cJournalists all around the world are afraid of math,\u201d she says. \u201cKenya\u2019s no exception.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.internews.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Internews<\/a> is a non-profit with the goal of improving the quality of news around the world. Constantaras is based in Kenya, the home of Internews\u2019 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.internewskenya.org\/dataportal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pilot data journalism project<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The aim of the project is to improve data-driven journalism and literacy amongst journalists, politicians and citizens.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">One reason Kenya was picked is because of its booming technology sector. There&#8217;s a big group of developers and coders who can work with journalists but &#8220;it\u2019s been a process to bring groups together,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>And she\u2019s not the only person facing challenges. Other international journalists at the event shared their personal obstacles &#8212; and slow steps to success.<\/p>\n<div class=\"audio-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"person selected\">\n<p class=\"name\">Eva Constantaras<\/p>\n<p class=\"title\">Internews<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"person\">\n<p class=\"name\">Florencia Coelho<\/p>\n<p class=\"title\">La Nacion<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"person\">\n<p class=\"name\">Javaria Tareen<\/p>\n<p class=\"title\">Pakistani Journalist<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Constantaras says its in the best interests of media in the developing world to place a higher emphasis on data-based storytelling. If they don\u2019t, they\u2019ll face financial consequences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe economic crisis that came to western media will eventually catch up with them,\u201d Constantaras says. \u201cAnd so the best way to prepare is to get ahead with digital and data journalism skills.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How do you teach data literacy?
