Facebook [is used] of course, but people are very torn at the lack of transparency from Facebook,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>In Brazil, journalist Mariana Lajolo, who is the Olympics columnist for Folha de S\u00e3o Paulo, a daily newspaper, said that Facebook and Twitter are also the top platforms for engagement in her country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have 5 million likes and 3.8 million followers on Twitter,&#8221; she said. &#8220;But the audience that comes from Facebook is 20 times bigger than Twitter. We use Twitter to find out what people are thinking about. Twitter less [popular] among the youth, but when it comes to the university-level intellectuals, then Twitter is famous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While media companies around the world rely on popular social media like Twitter and Facebook, start-up communities are also looking into local news applications.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe difficulty for us as Australians is the tools that we use are oriented towards Americans and American publications and American information sources and so on. It\u2019s harder to find tools that surface local content for us, so we still tend to rely a lot on building our own networks,\u201d Martin said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_562\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-562\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.home.ona\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/09\/IJ-fiona-martin-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-562\" src=\"http:\/\/testing.journalists.org\/wp-content\/sites\/3\/2015\/09\/IJ-fiona-martin-350x210.jpg\" alt=\"IJ fiona martin\" width=\"300\" height=\"180\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-562\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fiona Martin says Australian media tends to rely on Facebook and Twitter.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>She cites Aussie-based companies like The Likeable Engine, which collects data from news sources around the globe including Australian news sites, and Trendsmap, which visually maps Twitter trends.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love seeing what\u2019s trending in different parts of the country,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s really useful in terms of just getting a sense of how things move across the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Blogs retain popularity for engagement<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Tunde Akanni, the conference\u2019s sole delegate from Africa, was able to attend thanks to funding from the Ford Foundation. The lecturer in online journalism at Lagos State University in Nigeria said Blogspot &#8212; a platform owned by Google &#8212; is popular in his country. <\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_572\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-572\" style=\"width: 302px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.home.ona\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/09\/IJ-tunde-alakanni-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-572\" src=\"http:\/\/testing.journalists.org\/wp-content\/sites\/3\/2015\/09\/IJ-tunde-alakanni-350x210.jpg\" alt=\"IJ tunde alakanni\" width=\"302\" height=\"181\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-572\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tunde Akanni teaches his Nigerian journalism students to use Blogspot.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cEach year that I teach online journalism, I make my students set up Blogspots, they report, and then mount their stories on the Blogspots,&#8221; he said.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.home.ona\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/09\/IJ-tunde-alakanni-1.jpg\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Blogging is also crucial for Nettavisen, one of Norway\u2019s most popular news sites. \u00a0It relies on its substantial blogger community for audience engagement and feedback. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe have the biggest blog community in Norway, so that\u2019s also a place to get reaction on things that we\u2019re writing,\u201d said Trond Lepper\u00f8d, a journalist for Nettavisen. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The news site uses CXENSE, a metrics app based in Norway, to measure both news and blog traffic. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Where We&#8217;re From Fifty. \u00a0That\u2019s how many countries are represented at this year\u2019s ONA.
