Anika Anand of the Seattle Times and Evan Wyloge of\u00a0AZCIR want to help. They pitched\u00a0strategies and discussed creative solutions for making your story work out <em>without<\/em> vast resources.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.home.ona\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/09\/FullSizeRender-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-672\" src=\"http:\/\/testing.journalists.org\/wp-content\/sites\/3\/2015\/09\/FullSizeRender-350x210.jpg\" alt=\"FullSizeRender\" width=\"350\" height=\"210\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s the key to a perfect story? &#8220;Planning and tracking,&#8221; according to Anand and Wyloge, who spoke during a panel called &#8220;Big Ideas, Small Newsrooms.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Anand says it is important it is to have an interesting idea that\u00a0caters to the needs of its audience and then the tools\u00a0required to run with the ideas.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So what&#8217;s the big idea anyway? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A clear vision and concept require a well-designed pitch worksheet:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What&#8217;s the problem we are trying to solve for readers?<\/li>\n<li>What&#8217;s the idea that you have to solve it? What will we give readers?<\/li>\n<li>Who needs to see this project or product?<\/li>\n<li>What are the success metrics?<\/li>\n<li>What is the next better version of this project or how can it appeal to its readers&#8217; attention?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8220;I really think this is useful for our journalists about a project idea that they have or an upcoming idea that they came up with,&#8221; said Anand. &#8220;Hoping that it will be useful to people.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Having spent five years in a small newsroom, Wyloge suggested goals and strategies that small newsrooms can employ\u00a0to pull off their big project.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Goals<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How will you know it worked?<\/li>\n<li>How do you know it got to your audience?<\/li>\n<li>How will you know the\u00a0impact on future endeavors?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The story sounds right, but what about the shortage of resources? Wyloge provided a few strategies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Strategies<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Connect revenue to your project &#8211; maybe even foundation funding.<\/li>\n<li>Identify the talent you don&#8217;t have but you need by using\u00a0good pre-research through universities, development\u00a0incubators,\u00a0even through talking with co-workers.<\/li>\n<li>Use a project management tool to manage features of the story.<\/li>\n<li>Just like an external FAQ, get an internal FAQ that brings about easy understanding and successful cooperation among the team members.<\/li>\n<li>Make time for a project debrief.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.home.ona\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/09\/image21-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-677\" src=\"http:\/\/testing.journalists.org\/wp-content\/sites\/3\/2015\/09\/image21-350x210.jpg\" alt=\"image2\" width=\"350\" height=\"210\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Wyloge said\u00a0that often huge events and conferences like ONA feature famous journalists and their big stories. He wants to make the point that even small newsrooms can do great things.\u00a0&#8220;Putting structure to the process is critical. Dealing with your big ideas is like a product, and applying product management methods will pay off.
