(Wen-Yee Lee\/ONA Newsroom)\n\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\nFacebook product director Fidji Simo made the case at Thursday\u2019s keynote presentation that the company is working to help publishers create better content and thrive on the platform.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The keynote interview, conducted by Samantha Barry, head of social media for CNN, kept turning to the video-streaming tool Facebook Live.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The best Facebook Live videos don\u2019t necessarily have the best video quality, Simo said, but the content itself is compelling and often suspenseful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Weather is one of the most popular topics for live videos, Simo said. People like to know what&#8217;s current around them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She mentioned some of the most successful Facebook Live videos, including The Times-Picayune\u2019s video of a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/NOLANewsPhotos\/videos\/967200620057039\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">rescue during the catastrophic flooding in Baton Rouge<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, one of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/breaking-facebook-live-showing-lapd-outside-chris-browns-home\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">LAPD officers at musician Chris Brown&#8217;s house<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and a pair of videos in which a New York Times journalist <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/nytimes\/videos\/10150809580624999\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">tried to figure out who owned a set of Kodachrome slides<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> cast away in the garbage. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Viewers are bored by talking heads, Simo said. Instead, publishers should focus on creating visually interesting content and engaging viewers with questions and answers. Getting a live video past the 10-minute mark is important because it takes that long to gather an audience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Barry asked how Facebook deals with disturbing and violent videos, such as the video posted by the girlfriend of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/07\/08\/us\/philando-castile-falcon-heights-shooting.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Philando Castile<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, who was shot by a police officer during a traffic stop outside St. Paul, Minnesota.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;Live presents new challenges for these kinds of issues,&#8221; Simo said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A team of moderators watches out for videos that attract a lot of viewers and evaluates the content and the context of the images, she said. For instance, if a video glorifies violence, it probably would be blocked. If not, Facebook may put a warning on it and disable autoplay.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Simo recognized that journalists know when their content is graphic and said Facebook is working on a way to let them flag videos themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Simo said Facebook is also working on a &#8220;broadcaster&#8221; role for Pages so news outlets can allow journalists to go live without having full administrative access to the company\u2019s Facebook page. That <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JillianSed\/status\/776450761463070720\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">got some applause<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The company is also testing a dedicated &#8220;Video&#8221; tab on mobile in some regions, offering an easy way for users to discover videos, Simo said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/roomfordebate\/2016\/05\/17\/is-facebook-saving-journalism-or-ruining-it\/like-it-or-not-facebook-is-now-a-media-company\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Some<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.recode.net\/2016\/8\/30\/12710318\/facebook-media-company-advertising-chart\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">people<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> have argued that Facebook is becoming a media company as it rolls out products like Facebook Live and Instant Articles and curates news with Trending Topics. The room filled with chuckles and murmurs when Barry put the question to Simo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Simo said Facebook doesn\u2019t create content. &#8220;We&#8217;re not in the business of picking which topic the world should care about,&#8221; she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Barry said some publishers have been concerned that news posts have less prominence in users&#8217; feeds after <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/06\/30\/technology\/facebook-to-change-news-feed-to-focus-on-friends-and-family.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Facebook changed its algorithm<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to emphasize posts from family and friends. Simo acknowledged the change but said, overall, publications have seen little to no decrease in audience since the change in June.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Barry asked if the newsfeed algorithm can be &#8220;beat&#8221; so posts can reach more followers. Simo\u2019s answer essentially was \u201cno.\u201d Instead, she simply encouraged publishers to create content that resonates with people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Simo also discussed the success of Instant Articles on mobile platforms, saying stories published through Facebook\u2019s proprietary platform have 20 to 40 percent more readership. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She said Facebook is committed to giving publishers 100 percent of the ad revenue from Instant Articles. The company is creating tools to help publishers make more money, she said, such as larger ads for Instant Articles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The company is also testing a new feature for Instant Articles, Simo said. In an effort to help publishers that rely on subscriptions, they will be able to request readers&#8217; email addresses from within an article. That effectively allows publishers to use Facebook to create a list of potential subscribers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Barry asked about Facebook\u2019s decision to remove human curators from its Trending Topics section. In May, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/gizmodo.com\/former-facebook-workers-we-routinely-suppressed-conser-1775461006#_ga=1.133722638.1659265457.1453224650\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Gizmodo reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> that Facebook was suppressing conservative news from the trending section, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/morning-mix\/wp\/2016\/05\/13\/complaint-says-facebook-hid-right-wing-news-now-mark-zuckerberg-plans-to-meet-conservative-leaders\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">which the company denied<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. The company later <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/qz.com\/768122\/facebook-fires-human-editors-moves-to-algorithm-for-trending-topics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">fired those editors and shifted to an algorithm<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Simo said the company switched to an algorithm so the feature can be scaled to a global level. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bringing back human editors isn&#8217;t out of the question, she said. For now, though, Facebook is sticking with the algorithm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Barry relayed several questions from the audience via Twitter, ranging from best practices for Facebook Live to allowing publishers more data about their audience with Insights.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the future, Simo said she envisions a newsfeed filled with more immersive and live video.
