Mark Luckie, Reddit&#8217;s head of media and journalism, is a conference regular, but this is the first time he has set up a booth and done the hard sell for Reddit as a journalism tool.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Before it hits the news, people are talking about it on Reddit,&#8221; Luckie said. &#8220;They\u2019re talking about any and everything. It\u2019s important to be tapped into that community.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A few working journalists\u00a0\u2014\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/lizzieschiffman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lizzie Schiffman Tufano<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jameskust\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">James Kust<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/pstenser\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Phil Tenser<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 offered advice on how to use Reddit as a reporting tool.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Mine for story ideas.\u00a0<\/strong>Look\u00a0at your local Reddit page (called a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/metareddit.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">subreddit<\/a>) to see what people in your community are\u00a0talking about.\u00a0In local subreddits (there are hundreds for cities, towns, states and countries), redditors (writers and editors on reddit) post to discussion boards. For instance, if people are complaining about public transportation, maybe a reporter should look into it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Connect with potential sources.\u00a0<\/strong>Reporters can use local subreddits to find newsworthy\u00a0images. They can connect with the people\u00a0who posted them\u00a0to get permission to use them\u00a0and and\u00a0get more information.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Share stories.\u00a0<\/strong>By plugging in to different local subreddits for cities and interest areas, reporters can share stories they or their colleagues have done.
