{"id":2635,"date":"2017-10-06T17:44:05","date_gmt":"2017-10-06T21:44:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsroom.home.ona\/newsroom17\/?p=336"},"modified":"2021-06-22T18:28:13","modified_gmt":"2021-06-22T22:28:13","slug":"with-safety-in-mind-session-goes-off-the-record","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/journalists-org-develop.go-vip.co\/newsroom\/2017\/10\/06\/with-safety-in-mind-session-goes-off-the-record\/","title":{"rendered":"With safety in mind, session goes off the record"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The heated political climate in Washington, D.C, made the safety of 3,000 journalists and speakers a priority at this year\u2019s conference.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>That led Online News Association officials to agree to have part of one session on Thursday off-the-record while providing for additional security measures for one international speaker.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In this case, the request to alter the session format came the day before but Trevor Knoblich, ONA head of programs and events, said he supports such changes to conference programming as long as he finds them \u201creasonable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Several sessions at this year\u2019s conference are \u201coff-the-record,\u201d he said, in order to ensure a safe space for honest conversations about journalism and job searches as well as legal and ethical discussions. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe do our best to be transparent, but we need the space to speak honestly,\u201d Knoblich said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To ensure security for the speaker\u2019s appearance, conference staff worked with the Washington, D.C., Police Department and hotel staff at Washington Marriott Wardman Park, the conference hotel. In addition, ONA hired one private security guard for the Thursday panel discussion entitled &#8220;Government Propaganda and Media Manipulation.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For this session, the moderator told audience members that once the room was full, no further entry would be permitted and no one would be allowed to leave. Security guards were present to enforce the requirement and to check credentials for those entering the room.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Saleem Khan, the session moderator, opened with a slide announcing that a portion of the session would be \u201coff-the-record\u201d and suggested that attendees needing to leave early leave at that moment. (Christian Monterrosa\/ ONA 17 Student Newsroom)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">An investigative journalist for \u201cYle,\u201d a Finnish Broadcasting Company, Aro has been a target of harassment as a result of her reporting that kicked off in September 2014, when she began a crowdsourced series of stories about the trolls.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Aro said she was targeted by an international discrediting campaign immediately after publishing her first story and says her inbox has been flooding with trolls ever since, some not bothering to disguise their real name. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cAs I started to cover this Russia issue for troll propaganda, I was made a target,\u201d said Aro, speaking to the ONA Student Newsroom on the record after the session. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There was no prior notice that the discussion would be off-the-record. One session attendee <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/robpegoraro\/status\/916030662896844800\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">tweeted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> out that \u201cI\u2019ve been to five ONA conferences. This is the first one where part of a session has been off the record. #ONA17.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Khan, the founder and editor of JOVRNALISM and invstg8.net, said his role as the moderator was to both to move the session along and to maintain security. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe security of everyone at the conference is important,\u201d Khan said. \u201cYou want to make sure that people are safe and secure, whatever the circumstance may be, and in some circumstances, you may need to pay more attention to that. You address those concerns and issue as they arise, and if everything goes well, then everything goes well.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When asked about whether having \u201coff-the-record\u201d sessions was appropriate at a journalism conference, ONA officials said such requests are not unusual and that they deal with them on a case-by-case basis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ONA Executive Director Irving Washington believes conference staff acted with the protection of the speaker in mind given the circumstances, in accordance with the conference mission.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Summer Bedard, a student at the University of Maryland student who attended for the session, understood the reason for the course of action and sympathized with the presenter, who feared further targeting. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In an interview after the session, Aro said that in the past she\u2019s had trolls impersonate her dead father and make a video of a blonde woman impersonating her, waving NATO and American flags.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI tried to take it very professionally,\u201d Aro said. \u201cIn the beginning, when I realized that I am being framed as some kind of NATO, pro-America CIA Agent really, brutally and massively on the Russian fake-troll medias, I realized that \u2018Whoa, this troll topic is much more important than I realized.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Aro believes her experience is not unique, but rather a part of a highly coordinated international technique used to silence, harass and discredit any public figure looking into Russia\u2019s political regimes, activities and practices in a light considered unflattering by the regime. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Not only is there a fierce political atmosphere surrounding conference objectives, but also an ongoing disdain for journalists at work, as Knoblich and other ONA staffers recognize.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cGiven the political climate around journalists and the fact that we have over 3,000 people,\u201d Knoblich said, \u201cwe wanted to make sure everyone stayed safe.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The heated political climate in Washington, D.C, made the safety of 3,000 journalists and speakers a priority at this year\u2019s conference.
