Looking beyond engagement on social media posts and getting to know your audiences is the challenge for newsrooms today, according to a <\/span>panel<\/span><\/a> of experts who spoke about building trust with diverse communities. <\/span><\/p>\n

Accurate and fair reporting, they say, requires having ongoing relationships between reporters and traditionally marginalized communities. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Asian Twitter and Black Twitter universe does not represent the entire black community or the entire Asian or black community\u2014it is a slice of it,\u201d said Paul Cheung, director of journalism and technology innovation at the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. \u201cSo right now, you just need to pick up the phone and call somebody\u2014you just need to get out there.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Relationship development is crucial when turning people into sources, said Meredith Clark, assistant professor at the University of Virginia. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTalk to them [people on social media] as though they are a neighbor or someone in a coffee shop,\u201d Clark said. \u201cThey want that human engagement.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The challenge is that traditionally marginalized communities distrust the media, according to a recent<\/span> study<\/span><\/a> from the Knight Foundation. <\/span><\/p>\n

Newsrooms should go beyond the “likes” and “shares” and look at the dialogue around their posts, said Nisha Chittal, engagement editor at Vox. Journalists should learn from audience feedback and be open to criticism around their work, she said. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt is really important and incumbent on journalists to resist that urge to be defensive, and truly listen and be willing to learn from other people\u2019s perspectives, because that is the only way that we start to better understand these other communities,\u201d Chittal said. <\/span><\/p>\n

Moderator Anusha Alikhan, director of communications for the Knight Foundation, said after the event that young people can play a critical role in ensuring there is fair coverage of diverse communities online. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe interesting thing obviously about platforms like Twitter and Facebook or Snapchat and Instagram is that they are really governed by young voices,\u201d Alikhan said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI would say just keep doing what you\u2019re doing to the young people, and also really take a good look at the evolution that technology is going through and how it can contribute to richer conversations and more critical reporting around diverse issues.”<\/span><\/p>\n

In an interview after the event, Cheung said that he was happy with the diversity in the audience present in the room during the panel. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI hope to get the message out that diversity is not about checkboxes,\u201d Cheung said. \u201cAll of us have such different backgrounds, and white diversity is no different than Asian diversity. So if you can recognize the difference between German, Italian, Irish background then you can certainly recognize the diversity within all these different subcultures.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

It is important for reporters to think beyond their own experiences when trying to figure out what is important to the communities they cover, Chittal said in an interview after the panel.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe have to be careful to not depend on our own emotions and opinions when making decisions about what\u2019s worth covering,” Chittal said. “And really listen to the audience in these communities and what they are telling us is important to them.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Chittal said that having diversity in all levels of newsroom jobs can ultimately help organizations produce accurate coverage of a range of communities. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf you have people from various diverse backgrounds and communities in your newsroom, they will bring different perspectives on issues and they will help everybody in the newsroom learn more and become smarter and become more thoughtful, because we\u2019ll be exposed to different perspectives,\u201d Chittal said. \u201cAnd that\u2019s a really important part of the job as journalists.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
