{"id":3233,"date":"2019-09-14T13:40:01","date_gmt":"2019-09-14T18:40:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsroom.home.ona\/newsroom19\/?p=705"},"modified":"2021-06-22T18:25:06","modified_gmt":"2021-06-22T22:25:06","slug":"ona-leaders-reflect-on-our-past-championing-a-brighter-future","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/journalists-org-develop.go-vip.co\/newsroom\/2019\/09\/14\/ona-leaders-reflect-on-our-past-championing-a-brighter-future\/","title":{"rendered":"ONA leaders reflect on our past, championing a brighter future"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Rich Jaroslovsky, the founder of ONA, has described the first official conference in 2000 as a lunch at Columbia University to announce the winners of the Online Journalism Awards.<\/p>\n<p>This year, 2,800 attendees packed the Sheraton in New Orleans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs I\u2019ve seen ONA grow over the years, the reach and the enthusiasm of the organization amazes me,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/360007432\">Jaroslovsky said during a visit to the ONA19 Student Newsroom<\/a>. &#8220;There\u2019s so much doom and gloom in journalism, especially now, but folks at ONA are on fire for journalism.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>ONA turned 20 this year, and this year&#8217;s well-attended conference included sessions on machine-learning, website analytics and other innovations in online journalism. What began as an effort to gather together online &#8220;rebels&#8221; every year has developed into a conference filled with forward-thinkers and evangelists.<\/p>\n<p>Elizabeth Osder, one of ONA&#8217;s founding members, called her colleagues &#8220;either the leaders or the misfits of the existing world of journalism.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">In 20 years, ONA has grown from a few dozens of intrepid digital pioneers to thousands of community members working together to make ONA and digital journalism better and better. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Happy20thONA?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Happy20thONA<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/tllfG0cAsm\">pic.twitter.com\/tllfG0cAsm<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Online News Association (@ONA) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ONA\/status\/1172155099570954242?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 12, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>ONA\u00a0 has consistently drawn in new participants over the last 20 years and continues to grow, said Mandy Jenkins, the current president of the ONA board of directors.<\/p>\n<p>She&#8217;s proud of the way the organization has been able to maintain a sense of community among its members despite its leap in growth. The shift to more diverse leadership teams internally on the board and session leaders at the conference has been one of the major successes for ONA over the years, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I started out with ONA in 2011 as a social media producer, I was not very well connected and less comfortable taking the lead,&#8221; he said. &#8220;But this organization really allowed me to find my voice. I knew we were trying to create a new form of journalism and, instead of embracing it, there was a lot of resistance back then.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rich Jaroslovsky, founder and first president of ONA<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;We had to find colleagues amongst us to answer questions, to navigate a new world where we didn&#8217;t know how to solve problems.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Elizabeth Osder, one of founding ONA members<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In 1999, many U.S.-based news organizations had websites but mostly just re-published the newspaper online.\u00a0 It was not common to see journalists working for online publications. But a small group of journalists involved in the early days of digital journalism decided to create a group that allowed them to address issues they encountered in their new roles.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Rich Jaroslovsky, founder and first president of ONA, came up with the name Online News Association. Partnered with Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, it also organized the first Online Journalism Awards.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;From the first conference, I remember we ended up eating potato chips and that was a good thing. The conference was held soon after the 9\/11 terror attacks and organizers didn&#8217;t know if people were going to show up. And it wasn&#8217;t, indeed, a huge audience.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I remember saying that it was a coming of age for journalism. It also offered the results of a <a href=\"https:\/\/digitalfuturist.com\/the-home\/memo-collection\/online-news-association-digital-credibility-study-2001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">study on digital credibility <\/a>that showed one reality: People were interested in digital news and they trusted online media.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 id=\"2002-new-york-city\">2002: New York City<\/h3>\n<p>Nearly 200 journalists and people working within online journalism attended this conference. There was still one concern: How to be taken seriously by the news organizations and how to stop justifying what their work was.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ojr.org\/ojr\/kramer\/1035329878.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Revenue streams<\/a> seemed to be the buzz word of that year. News organizations were increasingly interested in getting users to pay for online content.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Enjoy <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/ona11?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#ona11<\/a> folks.
