{"id":3241,"date":"2019-09-14T11:41:16","date_gmt":"2019-09-14T16:41:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsroom.home.ona\/newsroom19\/?p=708"},"modified":"2021-06-22T18:22:54","modified_gmt":"2021-06-22T22:22:54","slug":"trauma-is-an-occupational-risk-for-journalists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/journalists-org-develop.go-vip.co\/newsroom\/2019\/09\/14\/trauma-is-an-occupational-risk-for-journalists\/","title":{"rendered":"Trauma is an occupational risk for journalists"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Andy Carvin, who has covered the ouster of Muammar Gaddafi in Libya and other conflicts, realized he had post-traumatic stress disorder when he was cooking penne pasta for his children.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As the pasta was boiling on the stove, Carvin, founder of NPR\u2019s social media desk and now a senior fellow at the Atlantic Council\u2019s Digital Forensic Research Lab, had a panic attack. Instead of seeing pasta, he saw arteries. And it wasn\u2019t just penne: Even the sight of cauliflower and melons made him think of brains.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThey were direct associations in my mind to scenes that I had either witnessed directly\u00a0 in footage from citizen journalists or things that I had followed on Twitter purely through text but had to create back in my mind to understand,\u201d Carvin said in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ona19.journalists.org\/sessions\/23674624\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">talk at ONA19<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">From natural disasters to mass shootings, the news today is filled with horror and tragedies. While viewers can turn off their televisions and block everything out, journalists can\u2019t.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">About nine of 10\u00a0 journalists reported experiencing at least four traumatic situations, according to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dartcenter.org\/content\/covering-trauma-impact-on-journalists\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">2008 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. As eyewitnesses to disasters, journalists are likely to experience PTSD and other mental health issues.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">According to the American Psychiatric Association, psychological trauma can occur just by witnessing an event. That can lead to PTSD if the symptoms persist for a month or more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dartcenter.org\/content\/covering-trauma-impact-on-journalists\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> says that between 4% and 59% of journalists may experience PTSD depending on the beats they cover and where they work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThere are situations of journalists who have never been to a war zone, never covered a natural disaster,\u201d said Carvin, who in 2014 founded <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/reported.ly\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Reported.ly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a social media site focused on human rights and social justice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cBut they are exposed to aspects of it because they are photo editors, video editors, multimedia editors, social media editors or in some cases line editors who are expected to read a lot of copy coming from a particular place where people and other reporters are experiencing trauma.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"second-hand-trauma\">Second-hand trauma<\/h4>\n<figure id=\"attachment_762\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-762\" style=\"width: 278px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-762\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.home.ona\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/09\/trauma-2-1.jpg?w=167\" alt=\"\" width=\"278\" height=\"349\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-762\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Graphic by Emily Chaiet<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Reporters don\u2019t have to witness an event to suffer from PTSD. They also can experience vicarious trauma from interviewing or working with other people who have witnessed or experienced pain, fear and terror. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Vicarious trauma is usually associated with mental health therapists who counsel traumatized clients. But\u00a0 journalists <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">can experience it as well, Carvin said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt&#8217;s almost like the mental equivalent to secondhand smoke,\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Carvin said. \u201cYou might not be there experiencing it yourself\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14px\">directly, but exposure to descriptions of the trauma, when intensive and often continuous enough, can cause them as well.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While not as powerful as firsthand trauma, secondhand trauma can cause the same symptoms such as loss of sleep or appetite.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dartcenter.org\/about\/people\/elana-newman\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Elana Newman<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, research director at the Dart Center, said first responders such as firefighters and paramedics experience this type of trauma, but journalists are prone to it as well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Newman added that the recent emphasis on the physical safety of journalists has led to more attention to the psychological safety of journalists.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cJournalists are trained to bear witness to other people&#8217;s stories,\u201d Newman said. \u201cI think there is some resistance of thinking they should be as affected<\/span><b>. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Obviously you&#8217;re not as affected as the person you&#8217;re covering, but just because you&#8217;re not as affected doesn&#8217;t mean that you&#8217;re not affected.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jim MacMillan, a journalist and journalism educator, has studied journalism and trauma as a Dart Center Ochberg Fellow. He began experiencing secondhand trauma after the 9\/11 attacks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">MacMillan said newsrooms are improving their emphasis on mental health, but not nearly fast enough.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dartcenter.org\/bio\/jim-macmillan\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">war reporter and photographer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, MacMillan began to notice symptoms of PTSD. He had trouble sleeping, experienced memory loss and still stutters while discussing events like 9\/11.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In 2007, MacMillan was part of the Ochberg Fellowship, a seminar that brings together journalists from around the world who wish to deepen their knowledge of trauma and improve coverage of violence. It was there that he learned about post-traumatic growth: when someone is able to overcome trauma, but also learn and grow from it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cTrauma isn\u2019t a weakness,\u201d MacMillan said. \u201cIt is more of an injury than an illness.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"finding-community-through-pain\">Finding community through pain<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Los Angeles Times reporter Sonali Kohli has covered mass shootings, children\u2019s deaths and fatal fires. Such heavy material left her feeling on edge: her heart racing when she heard police sirens, terror when she was near candles or bonfires. Her therapist told her to take a break, but she didn\u2019t listen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The symptoms increased as she kept reporting on local California tragedies. Kohli\u2019s therapist told her she was having PTSD,\u00a0 and she decided to take a three-week break from work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Before shutting down and logging off social media, she posted a Twitter thread, advocating for journalists to take care of their mental health:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/Sonali_Kohli\/status\/1103709956522426373?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1103709956522426373&#038;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fpublish.twitter.com%2F%3Fquery%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Ftwitter.com%252FSonali_Kohli%252Fstatus%252F1103709956522426373%26widget%3DTweet<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI was really happy to see the feedback that I got from the thread that I put on Twitter and how many people seem to relate,\u201d Kohli said. \u201cI know that there were some newsrooms that had conversations about it, and I think that a lot of other journalists have been talking about it, too.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Journalists who have experienced trauma have found comfort within each other.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Carvin created a Facebook group called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/468146643386958\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Journalism and Trauma<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u2014 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201ca safe space for journalists to discuss all aspects of trauma: exposure to trauma in the field, vicarious trauma, how to engage sources that have experienced trauma, and news management&#8217;s duty of care to protect their reporters and the public.\u201d The group has nearly 1,500 members.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"how-journalists-can-address-mental-health-issues\">How journalists can address mental health issues<\/h4>\n<figure id=\"attachment_900\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-900\" style=\"width: 178px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-900 \" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.home.ona\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/09\/Purple-Blocks-Timeline-Infographic-1-1.png?w=84\" alt=\"\" width=\"178\" height=\"445\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-900\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Graphic by Emily Chaiet<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Addressing the mental health of journalists may take some time, but Carvin has a simple solution: cute animal videos.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cCat videos &#8230; I cannot recommend them enough,\u201d Carvin said. \u201cCat videos, puppy videos, whatever it is that makes you laugh and smile. As silly as it sounds, that actually makes a difference.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ona19.journalists.org\/sessions\/23518353\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Self-Care for Journalists<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> panel on Friday, Chaseedaw Giles, social media manager for Kaiser Health News, recommended keeping an information diet <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2014 a balance of more serious and lighthearted news<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She added that it is important for journalists while working to take breaks and step away from their desks. Giles recommended practicing mindfulness and meditation.
