Maybe your DoorDash delivery guy dropped your burrito off on your doorstep. Perhaps Old Navy sent you the latest discount codes to use on its website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe it could be your local news outlet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mass texting is used to build new audiences and even generate revenue for media organizations. But in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and other disasters \u2014 fires, storms and more \u2014 texts have also become a lifeline for those organizations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In June 2020, Glacier Media launched its coronavirus text line in Canada, led by audience engagement editor Tereza Verenca.&nbsp; Her publications started sending out texts five days a week, hoping to cut through the \u201cinundation\u201d of information their audience was receiving about the coronavirus. With the COVID-19 pandemic now on the downswing, their strategy is evolving: Texts are now two days a week, and it feels a little like a break-up, according to Verenca.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt felt like we were breaking up with our audience,\u201d she said. \u201cThey sent us all the love, saying \u2018You guys are doing a great job, keep it up\u2019 or \u2018Don\u2019t go down to twice a week.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For other media organizations, different disasters inspired the move to text messaging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As winter storms rolled into Texas, the Texas Tribune made the jump in 24 hours, according to Bobby Blanchard, director for audience.\u00a0 For his team, sending out texts allowed them to circumvent the challenges that those experiencing harsh weather may have faced, including lack of power, internet outages and conserving cell phone battery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Texas Tribune and Glacier Media join the ranks of many other news organizations using text messaging, including <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/engagement-at-kpcc\/how-kpcc-embraced-its-role-as-las-help-desk-and-what-we-ve-learned-along-the-way-10b548ea23ca\">KPCC<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.journalism.co.uk\/podcast\/kim-bui-director-of-innovation-at-arizona-republic-and-david-cohn-co-founder-of-subtext-on-building-relationships-with-readers-via-text-message\/s399\/a760944\/\">Arizona Republic<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your media organization is starting to use texting for audience engagement, here are some things to consider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"identify-a-platform\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Identify a platform<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Texting campaigns can be run through any number of existing platforms, including <a href=\"https:\/\/joinsubtext.com\/\">Subtext<\/a> (which Glacier Media and Texas Tribune use) or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.groundsource.co\/\">GroundSource<\/a>.\u00a0 Unlike a Facebook messenger bot or customer service-type line, these platforms allow journalists to \u201cown\u201d their audience and encourage 2-way engagement, according to Subtext\u2019s co-founder David Cohn.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But getting started can be costly, especially for smaller media organizations or independent journalists. Texting can be more expensive than email or social media as an audience engagement strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"googlemaps\">\n\t\t\t\t<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" marginheight=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/d\/embed?mid=1SGq3TQMFzNYCFlnbb14SrwyXTKUv6VOw\"><\/iframe>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"consider-capacity\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Consider capacity<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Will a team or just one person take on texting and potential replies? Whether your publication is interested in developing a subscription service (like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/sign-up-for-full-court-text\">Los Angeles Times\u2019 Full-Court Text<\/a>) or pushing vital public service texts during an emergency, it is important to consider who can take over.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt wasn\u2019t like we sent out a text and that was it,\u201d Verenca said of Glacier Media\u2019s messaging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In some cases, readers may text back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople ask us questions, and we try to answer them if we can,\u201d Blanchard said. We don\u2019t respond to every single message because we just can\u2019t, and not all of them need a response either. But we do try to monitor what is being said back at us.\u201d When they can, the team at the Tribune responds. During the winter storms, this translated to directing people to drinkable water.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In your own newsroom, who will be tasked with answering texts back, in addition to sending them out?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"consider-your-audience\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Consider your audience<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Texting is an accessible medium: Nearly all phones have texting capability. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/internet\/2015\/04\/01\/us-smartphone-use-in-2015\/\">Pew Research Center<\/a>, text messaging is the most widely and frequently used smartphone feature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because of this accessibility, text messaging can also reach audiences that have been left out of the conversation, according to Andrew Haeg, CEO and founder of GroundSource.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the Texas Tribune, the engagement team is not necessarily driven to get their audience to their website.\u00a0 Instead, they are interested in \u201c(helping) our readers and (building) loyalty and engagement.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"be-intentional\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Be intentional<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a decision: Does this news moment rise to the occasion of us wanting to text our readers? Texting an audience is an incredibly invasive and intimate conversation,\u201d Blanchard said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBe very intentional and deliberate about who you\u2019re trying to reach through texting and why,\u201d Haeg said. \u201cNot from, \u2018Everyone is texting, so let\u2019s start doing that.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the winter storms, the Texas Tribune has been sending texts but with a modified strategy. \u201cOur approach to our audience that signs up for text messaging is we send them crucial information that changes how they live their lives,\u201d Blanchard said. \u201cIf shit got bad for lack of a better phrase, we were ready to keep utilizing that audience.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"be-transparent\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Be transparent<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBe transparent with your audience about what the text line is for,\u201d Blanchard said. \u201cIf you\u2019re launching a text line and your goal is to give people daily news updates, tell them it is going to be daily news updates.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Blanchard recommends making it clear what the frequency, cadence and topics of the text updates will be. \u201cThat way people won\u2019t be disappointed or frustrated when it\u2019s not what they expected it to be.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"consider-promotion\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Consider promotion<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>How will you acquire subscribers?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the winter storms, the Texas Tribune posted to social media as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2021\/02\/18\/texas-tribune-text-phone-number-news-updates\/\">on its website<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-instagram wp-block-embed-instagram\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" data-instgrm-captioned data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CLehSbSFQsL\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"13\" style=\" background:#FFF; Generally, they should include easy to understand language.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe had to find the balance between using the right language and encompassing all of our audiences.\u201d Verenca said. Using \u201cinoculation\u201d instead of \u201cvaccination\u201d caused some confusion in Glacier Media\u2019s case. Avoiding potentially hard to understand acronyms, such as ICYMI instead of \u201cin case you missed it\u201d and other words is key. Tone and emojis are also things to consider when crafting a text.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Blanchard estimates that a normal text is about 600 characters, or two to three long tweets.
