This hands-on workshop took place in a web chat platform. Due to its participatory, interactive nature, an archived recording is not available.
Among the many challenges exacerbated by the pandemic, burnout became a top-level discussion in media after several high-profile newsroom leaders cited it in their reasoning for leaving their positions.
Prompted by Jennifer Moss’s February “Beyond Burned Out” piece in Harvard Business Review, several news leaders began discussions about the role news organizations themselves play in burnout, and how a more mindful approach to key aspects of burnout could help curb staff departures.
Traditionally, our Featured Sessions address topics of broad-spectrum appeal to the ONA community. Burnout fits the bill as a topic, but conversations about organizational responsibility are still nascent.
Partnering with these leaders, we are taking a special approach to this Featured session, blending in elements of our popular Table Talks format. The experts below are on hand to provide guided discussions on six key aspects of burnout, as identified in the HBR piece.
This session is designed for:
- Newsroom staff looking to open a dialogue about burnout in their newsrooms
- Leaders looking for ideas for tools and policies that might help curb staff burnout
- All members of the ONA community committed to creating and maintaining productive work environments
