In the swirl of conversations around AI, we are working to bring focused discussions of critical issues to the fore at ONA23. Recognizing Inequities in Artificial Intelligence with Meredith Broussard brings forward a conversation often swept to the side in the technology space: how inclusive is each tool, really? As these products become widely adopted, what biases are introduced at the outset, with long-lasting, deleterious effects on our culture or those who otherwise may benefit from them?
Meredith, one of the foremost experts in advancing more equitable AI tools, will join us in a fireside chat on Saturday, Aug. 26 at 11:30 a.m. to discuss cases where inequities in AI are apparent. Her most recent book, More Than a Glitch: Confronting Race, Gender, and Ability Bias in Tech, tackles these issues head on and suggests we focus on the initial design of technological tools to create more equitable outcomes.
Special thanks to our sponsors.
Our goal is two-fold. First, we are aiming to help newsrooms think about their coverage of these tools, raising public awareness around inequality. Second, newsrooms are also adapting AI tools at a rapid pace, and Meredith will discuss strategies for mitigating against some of the existing flaws, ensuring newsrooms can take advantage of this emerging technology while limiting reproducing inequality.
Imaeyen Ibanga, AJ+ Presenter, Documentarian, & Senior Producer and ONA board member, will moderate this session.
ONA23 is happening in two parts this year. In Philadelphia from Aug. 23-26, we will focus on in-person learning and networking opportunities. At ONA23: Onward, Sept. 28-29, we will host a lean-back event where you can listen to timely conversations affecting newsrooms everywhere – including on AI and emerging platforms. If you have already registered for Philadelphia, you also have access to Onward, or you can pick up a standalone pass for it.
