We’re pleased to announce the featured session From Streaming to Space to South Philly: What Can News Leaders Learn from Leaders in Other Fields? This intriguing conversation will take place at the 2023 Online News Association Conference (#ONA23) in Philadelphia on Thursday, Aug. 24, at 2:30 p.m.
News leaders can gain valuable insights about the best way forward from the experiences of those who aren’t in journalism. In this discussion, our panelists will talk about what folks in news can learn from dynamic leaders who are news-adjacent or not in the journalism industry.
Moderator Niketa Patel, Senior Director, Executive Programs, at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY, will lead this conversation with Mark Little, Head of Product Safety Strategy at Spotify; Micheala Sosby, Operations Manager at NASA and Shannon Maldonado, Founder and Creative Director of YOWIE Philadelphia.
Special thanks to our sponsors.
Mark has a background in the overlapping worlds of journalism, media entrepreneurship and technology. He was previously CEO of Kinzen, which aimed to protect public conversations from online harms; Spotify acquired Kinzen in 2022. In 2009, Mark founded Storyful, the world’s first social news agency. He came to media entrepreneurship after a career as an award-winning journalist.
Micheala is an operations manager for NASA’s Office of Communications, where she champions financial sustainability and organizational development initiatives. But she’s no stranger to journalism. She teaches with the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism’s J+ programs and previously worked with national and local news organizations to develop audience-focused approaches to reporting and business development.
Shannon’s work centers on the intersection of design and community. She left a career in fashion design, where she worked for brands like Ralph Lauren and American Eagle, to launch YOWIE — a colorful housewares shop, creative platform and design studio that recently expanded its reach into hospitality with the opening of a 13-suite boutique hotel on Philadelphia’s famous South Street. She also serves on the board of directors at Fleisher Art Memorial and South Street Headhouse District.
These inspiring leaders will bring their multifaceted backgrounds to this robust conversation at ONA23. Don’t miss out!
