Ruth Serven Smith is the education editor at AL.com and leads The Alabama Education Lab and several staff and audience initiatives, including Alabama Vintage. She serves on Alabama Media Group’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee. The Ed Lab team’s work has won awards and been recognized for its commitment to finding and covering stories that hold schools accountable and elevate solutions around the state and nation. Serven Smith also serves as an advisory board member for Birmingham nonprofits Birmingham Talks and Prosper. Serven Smith was a 2022 member of the Online News Association’s Women’s Leadership Accelerator. Before joining AL.com, she was an editor and reporter in Charlottesville, Virginia.
