Dorothy M. Bland is a journalism professor at the University of North Texas Frank W. and Sue Mayborn School of Journalism. In 2019, she was honored as one of the top 35 women in higher education by Diverse Issues in Higher Education magazine. During her tenure as a journalism dean, student enrollment, faculty and staff grew. Under her leadership, the Mayborn launched a master’s degree in digital communication analytics plus earned AEJMC’s Equity and Diversity Award. She worked 25 years in the news industry, including USA Today. She is an award-winning journalist and earned three Gannett rings for outstanding performance as a publisher. Diversity, digital news, media management, social media and marketing are among her research interests. She earned her M.B.A. from George Washington University, B.S. in journalism from Arkansas State University and is a Ph.D. candidate at Florida State University.
