Miacel Spotted Elk is committed to a career in investigative journalism and covering the vital matters pertaining to the American West and Indian Country. Currently, she is interning at City Weekly, an award-winning alternative publication, and reporting news for her student paper, The Daily Utah Chronicle. In the past, she interned for KCPW, a public radio station, learning the ropes of reporting local news and audio production. Covering labor, the environment and education are key areas of interest which Miacel is continually interested in digging into. She will attend ProPublica’s Data Institute in New York this summer to learn an array of data skills such as data visualization and analyses for diving deeper into stories. Miacel was also selected by the Dow Jones News Fund to attend the Native American Journalism Conference this September. Miacel grew up near Bears Ears and is a Salt Lake City resident. In 2021, she will graduate from the University of Utah with a degree in political science.
