World Press Freedom Day

Today, the 30th anniversary of World Press Freedom Day, is a reminder to highlight the importance of a free press as a cornerstone of democracy and just societies. We’re sharing a few resources to help safeguard journalists’ safety and celebrate successes:

  • Digital Safety Snacks: Journalists around the world face targeted abuse online each day. We collaborated with the International Women’s Media Foundation and PEN America to produce an eight-part video series with concrete steps to fight back. Each short video delivers essential tips from the experts, including on securing social media accounts, password hygiene and navigating data brokers.
  • U.S. Press Freedom Tracker: This news site and database documents and provides context about press freedom violations in the U.S. Incidents include everything from arrests to equipment damage to prior restraint. If you’ve been targeted for your journalism work, submit a report.
  • Online Journalism Awards: With press freedom increasingly under attack, we are even more determined to showcase the impact of great journalism. Our awards program honors the best of the best in digital media.
